What We Do
In September 12, 1980 the 3rd military coup was made in Turkish Republic’s history which was followed by the 1982 Constitution written by the military. A de facto military coup continues even today. Turkey’s major problems can not be solved until this constitution is replaced with a civil one. We as the people of this country should take responsibility and initiate a discussion. Sahibinden Anayasa is an independent initiative which argues that an urgent, civil constitution is urgent in Turkey.
It is time for a civil and democratic constitution!
Our democracy has witnessed drastic hampers during the previous year. The diaries of the generals who were planning to attempt for a coup, while we were asleep, were revealed out. The journal that published the diaries was prosecuted and was ultimately closed down. A group, who turned out to be working for the state, was caught red-handed while bombing the citizens of this country. The chief of the general staff explicitly declared that he supports this group of bombers. A prosecutor who mentioned this event in his statement of accusation was banished and thrown out of his office. The parliament, for electing a president who does not fit into the definition of the "eligible citizen" of the official ideology, was faced with the ridiculous 367 decision.
WHY?
The military officers of the 12 September coup were aware of the fact that they would never find the opportunity to attempt for such a coup in the future again. The generals were actually enhancing the rule of the intervention while they were preparing and enforcing the constitution. It is not possible to compose a civil constitution with single amendments. We should immediately generate a new constitution and chuck out the constitution of the coup, which suppresses the individual and glorifies the state. If we can not accomplish this mission, we are afraid that we will lose our struggle for democracy.
